Immediate volunteer needs

  • Douglas County Senior Meals needs volunteer meal delivery drivers in Lawrence. Volunteers can choose a day Monday through Friday to deliver meals to senior citizens at home during lunchtime. Volunteers can schedule their route to accommodate work or school. For more information, contact Mary Feltz at Douglas County Senior Services, 842-0543.
  • The second annual “Crashin’ for the Kids” fund-raising demolition derby benefiting the Douglas County Infant-Toddler Coordinating Council is scheduled for Sept. 4 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Additional volunteers are still needed to help with publicity, ticket sales and other needs. Contact Dena Bracciano at 843-3059 for more information.
  • The March of Dimes will have its “Jail and Bail” fund-raising event on Aug. 19 at the Hereford House, 4931 W. Sixth St. Volunteer “bailiffs” greet “prisoners” and take mug shots, escort them before the judge, seat them in jail and provide instructions for their hourlong sentence. Volunteer “court clerks” review pledge forms and credit card slips and maintain running totals of pledges. For more information, contact Kate Larison at (785) 228-0084.
  • Independence Inc. needs two or three volunteers with a pickup truck who would be capable of lifting a donated hospital bed and transporting it in town to the home of a person with a disability who has no resources to have it moved. For more information, contact Stephanie at 841-0333.
