Local boy to be featured on soda bottle

The image of an 8-year-old Lawrence boy and one of the Jayhawks on Parade will be showing up soon on a soft-drink label.

Ken Nelson took a photo of his son, Gage, last summer posing with “Holy Hawk!” and submitted it to Jones Soda, a Seattle-based company. The soft-drink company selected the photo and will soon use it on bottles of Fufu Berry Jones Soda.

Artist Cathy Ledeker created “Holy Hawk!”, which stood outside Kansas University’s Murphy Hall, 15th Street and Naismith Drive.

“It’s pretty cool,” Gage said of his pending appearance on the soda bottles.

Ken Nelson submitted the photo to the company in November. Jones Soda sells soda and juices and is known for changing its labels often to incorporate photos sent in from consumers.

“It was a surprise to hear back from them,” said Gail Nelson, Ken’s wife. “We forgot about it.”

But now the family is on a mission to find bottles of FuFu Berry Jones Soda featuring the photo of Gage. It’s unknown when the bottles will show up on store shelves, but the odds of finding one with Gage’s picture could be in the Nelson family’s favor. FuFu Berry is one of the most popular flavors made by Jones Soda, said Leah Shields, consumer/investor relations specialist for the company.

“Since it is popular, it may not be on the shelves as long,” Shields said. “But its popularity means it will be widely distributed.”

Shields selects photos for the 30 drink flavors every month. She said the company had about 500,000 photos she was sorting through to decide which ones make it onto the bottles. About 1 percent of the photos submitted are chosen for the labels.
