Gladys Virginia Gilliland

Services for Gladys Virginia Gilliland, 97, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Chapel.

Mrs. Gilliland died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.

She was born Dec. 4, 1906, in Reno, Kan., the daughter of Charles Woodward and Barbara McCleary Hemphill. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1925.

She received her teaching certificate from Kansas University in 1928, and she taught school in Oklahoma and in rural Douglas County.

Mrs. Gilliland had lived in Lawrence since 1973.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and also was a member of the Betty Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Lawrence Flower Club, Autumn Club, and the Retired Teacher’s Assn. She was also Past Worthy Matron of the Rinda Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star in Tonganoxie.

She married Floyd Raymond Gilliland on Oct. 25, 1930, in Ottawa. He died in 1973.

Survivors include a daughter, Virginia “Ginger” Baker, Huntsville, Ala., a sister, Thelma Evans, Lawrence; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
