Be careful if you have to drive into low-lying areas today — Douglas County was under a flood warning earlier today and more rains are expected through the early afternoon, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

By 12:30 p.m., Lawrence police had closed the intersection at 23rd Street and Ousdahl Road because of heavy flooding, Schack said. There were also flooding problems reported in southwest Lawrence, where police had closed the intersections of 28th Street and Winterbrook Drive and at Winterbrook Drive and Jordan Lane, Schack said. Parts of U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence were also having flooding problems, she said.

“If you have to head out, be careful of the ponding on the roadways,” Schack said.

By about 12:45 p.m. today, Lawrence Municipal Airport had recorded about 2.44 inches of rain had fallen since midnight. By 1:30 p.m., the rain guage at the 6News studio in downtown Lawrence had recorded 3.59 inches of rain since midnight.

The forecast called for the rain to continue through 2 p.m., Schack said.

The National Weather Service had placed Douglas County under a flood warning, which ended at 1 p.m. today. Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties have been placed under an urban and small stream flooding advisory by the National Weather Service, Schack said.

The National Weather Service said that flooding was reported over rural sections and in low-lying poor drainage areas throughout the counties where the flood warning was issued, which also includes Shawnee, Osage, Morri, Waubunsee, Osage and northern Lyon counties.

Some roads are closed in southern Shawnee County, with water flowing over roads in other areas, the National Weather Service reported. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches have occurred since early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service reported.
