Van Go’s JAMS benches turned over to sponsors

Van Go’s JAMS (Jobs in the Arts Make Sense) played host to its Summer Benchmark program Friday evening.

The teens involved in JAMS worked with local companies to produce benches that the companies commissioned and will display at their offices. The benches were hand-painted and built by the teens, who have been working since June 1 on the project.

JAMS is Van Go’s youth employment program for at risk teens. Founder Lynne Green said the teens could create amazing art despite their lack of training.

“All they need to express is an interest in being open to learning,” she said.

Military

1991 KU law graduate confirmed for Army post

A graduate of the Kansas University School of Law has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be assistant secretary of the Army for financial management.

Valerie Lynn Baldwin, who received her juris doctorate from KU in 1991, will oversee the financial management section of the Army. The Senate confirmed her Thursday.

She also holds a bachelor’s degree from Wichita State University and a graduate degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Former Haskell student convicted in stabbings

A Douglas County jury on Friday convicted a former Haskell Indian Nations University student in the March 13 stabbings at an on-campus sports complex.

Chadwick Noah, 23, was convicted of two counts of aggravated battery. Police said the stabbings happened during an early-morning fight that broke out after a group sneaked into Haskell’s Coffin Sports Complex to go swimming.

Two men, ages 19 and 23, received treatment at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for multiple stab wounds.

Noah is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 16.
