Most of the country’s major-college basketball coaches have been in Augusta, Ga., this week scouting high school players at the Nike Peach Jam tournament.

Kansas University’s Bill Self, Kentucky’s Tubby Smith and North Carolina’s Roy Williams on Friday were spotted by a rivals.com analyst sitting together for a matchup between big men Tyler Hansbrough and Richard Hendrix.

Hansbrough, a 6-9, 230-pounder from Poplar Bluff, Mo., scored 25 points and grabbed 11 boards, while the 6-8, 250-pound Hendrix, of Athens, Ala., answered with 13 points, five boards.

Hansbrough’s effort lifted his St. Louis Eagles team past the Alabama Lasers, 68-63.

North Carolina is believed to be leading KU, Kentucky and Missouri in the battle for Hansbrough. Hendrix is considering UNC, UAB, Alabama and Tennessee.

“I wouldn’t say I have a leader right now, but I like North Carolina a lot,” Hansbrough told carolinablue.com.

He’s also considering a direct jump from high school to the NBA.

“I look at it like they are taking a lot of high school kids. If they’re taking them young, I might have to try it,” Hansbrough told the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal.

Hansbrough, who has made an official visit to KU, will compete in the Price Chopper Invitational July 28-31 in Shawnee.

Also on hand will be Dallas preps C.J. Miles and Kevin Rogers, who will play for Team Texas at the event.

Miles, 6-6 from Dallas Skyline High, and Rogers, 6-8 from Dallas South Oak Cliff High, who plan to attend the same school, will visit KU, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Arizona this fall.

“As of right now, we are planning on going to the same college, because I think it would be great to play on the same team with Kevin in college,” Miles told rivals.com Friday.

“But if we decide we want to go to separate places, then we will cross that bridge when we come to it.”

The Texans, who are competing at Peach Jam this weekend, also are considering Texas, UConn and Illinois.

Two seniors-to-be who already have committed to Kansas are having productive summers.

Micah Downs, a 6-7 1/2 shooting guard/small forward from Bothell, Wash., was rated fourth overall player at Nike camp regardless of position. In rivals.com analyst Mark Melvin’s ratings, the 187-pounder actually beat out Hansbrough, who was rated sixth.

Mario Chalmers, a 6-1, 165-pound point guard from Anchorage, averaged 22 points a game at the Olympic Festival in Colorado. He and future Duke player Greg Paulus were ranked the top two point guards at the adidas Superstar camp in Suwanee, Ga.

“He’s a player,” Philadelphia 76ers guard Eric Snow told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

• Thomas firing away: The Washington Wizards are giving former Jayhawk shooting guard Billy Thomas every chance to garner an invitation to the veteran’s camp this September.

The 6-4 Thomas, who played in Italy last year, scored 13 points off 6-of-13 shooting in Washington’s 119-94 victory over Orlando Thursday in Las Vegas. He scored three points off 1-of-4 three-point shooting in the Wizards’ loss to Phoenix on Wednesday.

Earlier this summer, Thomas averaged 4.0 points off 8-of-23 shooting in five Pepsi Summer League games in Orlando, Fla. He made four of 13 threes.

• Langford honored: KU senior Keith Langford has been third-team preseason “All Rolls Royce” by ESPN’s Dick Vitale. KU’s Wayne Simien soon will be named first team by Vitale in his preseason All-America ratings.
