‘Entourage’ follows other superior HBO fare

The new half-hour comedy “Entourage” (9 p.m. Sunday, HBO) offers a fast-paced, slice-of-life glance at young Hollywood. What’s it like for a kid from Queens, N.Y., to see his face on a giant billboard on Sunset Boulevard? Vince (Adrian Grenier) has dreamy looks. But will he become the next Johnny Depp or merely the latest flash in the pan? He surrounds himself with hometown lackeys, including his “manager,” Eric (Kevin Connolly), his half-brother Drama (Kevin Dillon), and Turtle (Jerry Ferrara), who acts as chauffeur, go-fer and court jester.

Who cares about the antics of nouveau riche vulgarians? At its weakest, “Entourage” cannot answer that question. But at it’s frequent best, “Entourage” is pure, breezy fun, capturing the infectious if foul-mouthed camaraderie of buddies too green to be spoiled by the trappings of stardom. Does Vince allow Eric to make all of his decisions for him because he’s lazy, or because he trusts and admires him?

Jeremy Piven makes the most of a great role as Vince’s obnoxious agent, who frequently compares his Ivy League background to Eric’s experience as a pizza parlor manager. In lesser comedies (think “Arliss” and “Action”), Piven’s character would be the star. But here, his type-A loathsomeness only underscores the inherent, clueless decency of Vince and his pack.
