Bookman, Reynolds advance

Former KU runner Menefee fifth in 5,000 at U.S. track trials

? Former Kansas University distance runner Mark Menefee led with three laps to go, but ultimately finished fifth in the 5,000 Friday night at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials.

Menefee was clocked in 13:37.68. Tim Broe of adidas won in 13:27.36, followed by Jonathon Riley (13:30.85) and Bolota Asmerom (13:32.77).

KU sprinter Leo Bookman on Friday placed fourth in his 200 qualifying heat and moved on to today’s 2 p.m. quarterfinals.

Bookman’s time of 20.65 was 17th best of the 24 competitors.

KU throws coach Doug Reynolds also advanced to Sunday’s discus finals. Reynolds, 29, placed 11th in the discus prelims Friday at 190-11, good for eighth place in his 12-person flight.

Also Friday, former Kansas University distance runner Charlie Gruber advanced to Sunday’s 1,500 finals.

Gruber, a 25-year-old KU volunteer assistant track coach competing for Nike, placed second in his semifinal heat in a time of 3:43.87.
