School-supply help needed

The annual drive for school supplies for children of low-income families will continue until the school year begins in August. Community service agencies, including ECKAN, Penn House and Ballard Center, are working to assure that more than 1,000 children receive supplies. Volunteers can sponsor school supply drives, donate dollars or supplies directly to the agencies, assist the agencies with taking applications from families, and with sorting donated supplies.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • Lawrence Habitat for Humanity is looking for a volunteer bookkeeper. Volunteer must be comfortable using computers and bookkeeping software. This volunteer position will require approximately 10 hours a week. For more information, contact Linda Klinker at Habitat for Humanity, 832-0777.
  • The annual Salvation Army fan drive took place last weekend but the agency will still accept additional donations, which are distributed to senior citizens during the hottest months of the year. Fans may be brought to the Salvation Army, 946 N.H. For more information, contact Rochelle Montgomery at 843-4188.
  • The Salvation Army shelter and meal program also needs volunteers. Lunch volunteers can help on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays from noon to approximately 2:30 p.m. with serving and clean-up. Evening meal volunteers are needed seven nights a week from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The shelter needs donations of soap, razors, bath towels and toothpaste for shelter guests.   • The second annual “Crashin’ for the Kids” fund-raising demolition derby benefiting the Douglas County Infant-Toddler Coordinating Council is scheduled for Sept. 4 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Volunteers are needed. An event coordinator is needed to lead the effort. Additional volunteers will help with publicity, ticket sales and other needs over the course of the summer. The council provides support and services to families and children younger than 3 years old with special needs or developmental delays. For more information, contact iccdena@sunflower.com.
  • Lawrence Habitat for Humanity volunteers are constructing a new home for a deserving family and new volunteers are welcome. A workday will begin at 9 a.m. July 24 at 1816 Atherton Court. Lunch will be provided. Volunteers must be at least 16. Contact the Habitat for Humanity office at 832-0777.
