Outlaws batter Ottawa for third

Lawrence collects 13 hits in 14-6 victory at its own tournament

With Ottawa hurler Patrick Barrigan on the mound, Sunday was not an expected time for the Lawrence Outlaws to turn into Murderers’ Row.

But 14 runs and 13 hits later, the Outlaws were clutching a third-place plaque from the Outlaw tournament, beating Ottawa, 14-6, in six innings at Free State High.

Going into Sunday’s showdown, Barrigan had a 6-0 record with an earned-run average under 3.00 this season. One of the victories was against the Outlaws in the Chanute Tournament.

His latest clash with Lawrence won’t exactly pad the stats, though. The Outlaws were relentless, smacking at least one hit in every inning and scoring at least one run in every inning but the third.

“We had trouble with him down in Chanute,” Outlaws coach Matt Schubert said. “We only managed four hits off of him there, so I was real pleased today.”

Even with a lack of power, the Outlaws were churning runs by playing small ball and being pests on the bases. Leadoff hitter Mitch McPherson was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and an RBI. He perfectly set up three-hole hitter Aaron Westerhouse, who was 3-for-5 with five RBIs.

“I usually get up when we’ve got situations,” Westerhouse said. “I want to get them around and get them home so we can get runs on the board.”

Lawrence was constantly on base, creating problems for Barrigan. It led to a three-run first inning and another score in the second, putting the Outlaws up 4-0.

Ottawa came back, though, and briefly took a 5-4 lead when a passed ball and throwing error allowed two runs to cross the plate in the top of the fourth.

Lawrence Outlaws' Chris Gabriel shouts encouragement to teammates in their 14-6 victory over Ottawa. The victory Sunday at Free State High gave the Outlaws third place at their own tournament.

The Outlaws calmly answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth, another run in the fifth and four runs in the sixth. Westerhouse’s last hit, a two-run single with no outs in the sixth, finished the game thanks to the eight-run mercy rule.

“It’s always good to end the tournament on a winning note,” Schubert said. “Hopefully it catapults us to a strong finish.”

Ottawa had two-hit games from Clint Bones and Michael Espinosa, but was hurt by nine errors on the day, many due to a lack of concentration.

Nate Hardmen earned the victory for the Outlaws, logging 22/3 innings of relief.

The Outlaws finished 3-1 in their own tournament and are 21-11 on the season. The two teams will play each other again Tuesday in a regular-season doubleheader at Ottawa.
