Lynn McClure will join Leavenworth Area Development as executive director Aug. 2. He previously was economic development administrator for the city of Gladstone, Mo.

• Employees of Hair Experts Design Team, Lawrence, participated in a stress-reduction workshop conducted June 29 by Ann Mincey, vice president of global communications for Redken Fifth Avenue NYC.

Mincey visited the Hair Experts salon and spa for a daylong workshop, one of her 10 trips this year to teach “Heart Math” at Redken Elite Club VIP salons across the country.

Heart Math encourages employees to slow down their heart rates. The technique is designed to help workers stay calm, control their emotions and, in turn, improve the service experience for customers.

Brenda Peterson-Smith, owner of Hair Experts, joined 14 of her stylists and other employees in taking part in the program.

• John Oberzan, a registered representative with Robert W. Baird & Co. Inc. in Lawrence, has earned Planco’s highest honor: membership in the 2004 Captain’s Club. Planco, a wholesaler of investment and insurance products, distinguishes those representatives who produce more than $1 million in sales in a calendar year with Captain’s Club membership.
• The Kansas Society of Land Surveyors participated in the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Celebration July 1-4 in Leavenworth and Atchison by providing educational tents. Surveyors provided information about surveying, mapping and operation of displayed equipment. Among those who volunteered were Michael Kelly and Dennis Boltz, both of Lawrence.
• Stephanie Bowler has opened a Padgett Business Services office servicing the greater Topeka area. Padgett specializes in providing financial reporting, payroll and tax consulting services to businesses with fewer than 20 employees.

Bowler’s Padgett office offers a personalized monthly profit and loss statement, payroll processing and ongoing tax planning and business consulting, along with pick-up and delivery service. In addition, Padgett offers preparation services for individual, partnership and corporate income tax returns. Bowler was a general manager of a hotel in Lawrence.

• David Corliss, assistant city manager and director of legal services, presented a 2004 Legislative Update at the spring meeting of the City Attorneys Association of Kansas. The meeting was June 11 in Lawrence.
• Wendi Kelemen-Braden, a nationally certified therapist in therapeutic massage and bodywork for Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s Kreider Rehabilitation Services, recently completed the third component of eight in a 300-hour Oncology Massage Certification Program at the Scherer Institute of Natural Healing in Santa Fe, N.M. The massage program prepares already qualified therapists by reinforcing their previous massage training. Kelemen-Braden has had more than 1,000 hours of therapy education and seven years of massage experience.
• John Kiefer, of Kief’s Audio/Video in Lawrence, attended the 2004 Pioneer Elite Road Show June 22-26 in San Diego. The conference was attended by 120 dealers of audio/video equipment. Kiefer also served on a select panel of 12 audio/video professionals that interact with consumers on a daily basis. The panel was formed to evaluate opinions on plasma televisions. In the opinion of the panel, the Pioneer Elite plasma television is regarded as the highest performance television available on the consumer market.
• Barbara Brizendine has been named the Lawrence coordinator for KC Kid Proof. The Kansas City, Mo.-based company specializes in providing in-home safety evaluations. Services include room-by-room inspections and evaluations with recommendations for injury prevention products. Certified teaching of first-aid and infant and child CPR will be provided to parents, grandparents and child-care providers along with baby-sitting certification for 12 years and older.
• Morgan Stanley announced the appointment of Chris Schumm, Lawrence, as financial adviser of its Lawrence office at 1201 Wakarusa Drive, Building E1. Schumm has been with Morgan Stanley for eight years. Schumm received a bachelor’s degree from Kansas University.

Consumer Credit Counseling Services will present “Discover More Dollars” from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the United Way Building, 2518 Ridge Court. The free workshop will include the following topics: financial goal setting, developing a budget, cutting costs, evaluating spending habits and starting a savings plan. • The Kansas Angus Assn. tour will be Aug. 20-21 in the Flint Hills. The tour will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Mill Brae Ranch in Maple Hill. Activities will include a ranch tour, steak sandwich dinner, campfire songs and exhibits.

A 7:30 a.m. breakfast and presentations by Downey Ranch Inc., Wamego, and Shamrock Farms, Manhattan, will kick off activities scheduled for Aug. 21. There will be a pasture tour of the Lyons Ranch, Manhattan, and a tour of Mill Creek Ranch, Alma. There also will be exhibits and presentations on topics such as animal IDs, Internet use, angus calves, animal health and showmanship.

• The American Society of Appraisers International Appraisal conference will be July 25-28 at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown in Kansas City, Mo. There will be more than 40 seminars, panel sessions and tours of Kansas City landmarks. The conference will cover topics such as evaluating assembly operations, determining the worth of casino equipment, valuing Georgia O’Keefe artwork, inspecting and appraising rail equipment, valuing real estate in emerging markets and detecting counterfeits.

• The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will conduct public hearings in August for proposed regulations to address municipal, commercial, and industrial wastewater lagoons. These regulations will ensure groundwater protections and practices are put in place for municipal, commercial, and industrial waste treatment lagoons.

• Taxpayers, businesspersons and tax professionals have an opportunity to become an Enrolled Agent, eligible to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, through taking and passing an examination demonstrating competence in tax matters.

The deadline to apply to take the IRS Special Enrollment Examination is July 31. The test itself, which is administered by the IRS on an annual basis, is scheduled to take place Sept. 22-23 at 91 locations nationwide and four international sites. In Kansas, the test will be given in Wichita and Overland Park.

The application, Form 2587, may be obtained by calling the IRS at (800) TAX-FORM. It also is available online at www.irs.gov. The fee is $55.
