Schilling won’t pitch in All-Star game

Boston — Curt Schilling will not pitch in next week’s All-Star game because of pain in his ankle, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Friday.

“Schill will not pitch,” Francona said before Boston’s game against Texas. “But he will attend. … He spent a lot of time speaking to medical people and came to the decision that it was just not in his best interest, and I understand that.”

Schilling’s ankle was injured early in the season after he was hit by a line drive. He has been getting shots to relieve pain every time he pitches.

“It’s probably not what the fans want to hear, but it’s the right thing to do,” Francona said. “I left it completely up to him. I wanted him to make the right choice on his own after speaking with the medical people.”

Thomas headed to DL

Chicago — The Chicago White Sox plan to put designated hitter Frank Thomas on the 15-day disabled list today because of inflammation in his left ankle. The White Sox learned Friday they would lose Thomas, one day after fellow slugger Magglio Ordonez came off the disabled list. Ordonez missed 36 games after tearing cartilage in his left knee. He had surgery on June 5. The White Sox will recall outfielder Joe Borchard from Triple-A Charlotte.

Cubs’ Wood scheduled to return on Sunday

St. Louis — Just before the All-Star break, the Chicago Cubs are getting their ailing rotation back together. Kerry Wood, who has been on the 15-day disabled list for almost two months because of a strained right triceps muscle, is set to pitch Sunday against St. Louis in the Cubs’ final game before the break.

Wood, 3-3 with a 2.82 earned-run average, threw a short bullpen session before Friday’s game and reported no problems.

He has been on the DL since May 12.
