Tom and Kim Taylor, Baldwin, announce the birth of their daughter, Emily Grace Taylor, born on June 22, 2004, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. She has a sister, Allison Marie Taylor, 2. Grandparents are Terry and Janice McKenzie, Eudora; Andy and Sharon Baux, Lawrence, and Dave Taylor, Pomona. Great-grandparents are Cecil Jenks, De Soto, and Charlotte Stack, Kansas City, Kan.

  • Paul Epp, Lawrence, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in music from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. He is a member of the National Music Honor Society. Commencement exercises were May 14.

  • Christy Wheeler, a student at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., received the Robert W. Bouknecht Jr. Memorial Scholarship and The Shannon Oxbridge Scholarship. Christy, daughter of Dale and Wendy Wheeler, is studying music.

  • Staci Cook and Penny Kitterman, both of McLouth, graduated in May with Departmental Academic Honors at Pittsburg State University for earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. Cook received a degree in accounting, while Kitterman earned a degree in biology.

  • Magdalene Brooke, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2004 semester at Scripps College in Claremont, Calif.

  • Emily Loewen and Phoebe Brow, both of Lawrence, made the dean’s list at Cornell College for the spring 2004 semester by receiving at least a 3.6 grade-point average.

  • Amber Jaimez and Lisa Dixon, both of Lawrence, were accepted to participate in the Washington Internships for Native Students program at American University. Jaimez and Dixon are Haskell Indian Nations University students.

Jaimez is a member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux of Pine Ridge tribe. Dixon is a member of the Cherokee tribe.

Emporia State University announces area students who made honors during the spring 2004 semester. They were Natalie Moreau, Baldwin; Sandy Taylor, Eudora; Ashley Carpenter, Marc Connelly, Sheena Kernes, Melissa Kramer, Lacey Luina and Jean Malcolm, Lawrence; Lauren Gantz and Kelli Kuhlman, Lecompton; Teresa Baker, Allyson Lyman, Elisabeth Lyman, Christopher Pellant and Sarah Weber, Ottawa; Sarah Eatinger, Neal Montis and Amanda Pearce, Wellsville; Sherri Braksick, McLouth; and Brandy Jones, Perry.

Umur Yilmaz, Lawrence, received a master’s degree in computer science and applications from Virginia Tech University during a commencement ceremony on May 14.

  • Andrew Trent, Lawrence, received an associate’s degree from Hesston College during commencement ceremonies May 2.

  • Sarah Burns, a 2000 Free State High School student, was named to the dean’s list at Smith College, Northampton, Mass., for the 2003-2004 school year by earning at least a 3.3 grade-point average. She graduated May 16 from the college where she studied government. She is the daughter of Garth and Deborah Burns, Lawrence.
