4-year-old hurt by fireworks dies

Kansas City, Mo. — A 4-year-old girl has died from injuries she suffered when she was struck in the face by an exploding firework.

Shonna Jo Gresham, of rural Platte County, died Wednesday after she was taken off life support at Children’s Mercy Hospital, her family said.

A wooden piece of the firework hit Shonna in the face, leaving her brain dead, said her father, James Gresham.

Authorities said the death was an accident and the mortar firework that hit her was legal to ignite in a rural area.

It happened Monday at a home where about 20 people were lighting fireworks.

Neighbors said Shonna was playing about 150 feet away when a wooden piece from an exploded firework device flew across the lawn and hit her in the face.

Shonna, who turned 4 on June 20, is survived by her parents and a 10-year-old brother.

Former janitor arrested for locker room tape

Wichita — A former maintenance worker at a Roman Catholic school has been arrested for having a videotape showing girls in a locker room.

Rogelio Buan, 43, was charged Wednesday with one felony count of sexual exploitation of a child and is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Buan, also known as Roger C. Buan, worked for eight years at Kapaun Mount Carmel High School before being fired in March for reasons unrelated to the videotape, said Amy Pavlacka, a spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Wichita.
