Raiders win pair

Lawrence’s Raiders bounced back from Sunday’s loss at the Bartlesville, Okla., tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Leavenworth in American Legion baseball Monday at Free State Field.

The Raiders won the first game, 5-0, behind the solid pitching of Jake Hoover. Tyson Corley had a pair of RBIs, and Ryan Engel and Aaron Madill each were 2-for-3 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, Leavenworth tried to rally, but Lawrence prevailed, 8-6. Madill earned the win in relief of starter Matthew Wingert. Taylor Martin blasted a two-run home run, and Paul Metzler was 2-for-3.

“We came off a disappointing end to the weekend, and it was good to get out here the next day and get two W’s,” Raiders coach Reggie Christiansen said.

Lawrence (21-10) will play host to St. Joseph, Mo., at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Free State.
