Divers recover body from Lake Perry

Oskaloosa — Jefferson County authorities are investigating a drowning at Lake Perry.

At 4:42 p.m. Sunday divers from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office recovered a body from the lake after receiving a report of a possible drowning in the Slough Creek area.

The name of the victim was not released Sunday pending notification of the family. No other details were released because the incident was still under investigation.

Kansas GOP names convention delegates

The Republican Party of Kansas has announced its delegates for the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City.

Jesse Borjon, Lawrence, and Michael Patterson, Leavenworth, have been selected as alternate delegates. They will travel to New York with the delegation and will be admitted to all convention sessions.

The delegation will also include U.S. Rep. Jerry Moran, of Hays, and 3rd District congressional candidate Adam Taff.

In all, 36 delegates and 36 alternates will represent Kansas at the convention, in addition to state party Chairman Dennis Jones and other party officials.

The convention will take place Aug. 30-Sept. 2 at Madison Square Garden.

Groups organize education conference

More than 30 school districts, nonprofit and teacher organizations, and businesses representing Kansas and Missouri are planning to conduct a conference July 26-29 at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Liberty, Mo.

The Connecting Learning Communities Conference will be hosted by Park University and the Liberty school district, with Sprint sponsoring the event. The main topic of the conference is addressing the student achievement gap.

Sprint also will provide 100 scholarships to pay for the conference for educators. The deadline to submit scholarship applications is July 10.
