VH1 and TCM keep viewers on their toes

This weekend, when we recall our nation’s fight for independence, let us celebrate our freedom to dance. Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow and Dianne Wiest star in the 1984 musical “Footloose” (5:30 p.m., VH1). The fancy footwork continues with the 1983 welder-turned-dancer, torn-sweatshirt classic “Flashdance” (8 p.m., VH1).

The folks at Turner Classic Movies get a jumpstart on the Fourth of July weekend with a stoned sole picnic of cinematic shoes. Dorothy dons a pair of magic ruby slippers in the beloved 1939 fantasy “The Wizard of Oz” (7 p.m., Turner Classic Movies). Then, a doomed dancer (Moira Shearer) finds there is no escaping her fate (or her slippers) in the gorgeous 1948 ballet fantasy “The Red Shoes” (10 p.m.), from the creative team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. If you’ve never seen this gem, don’t dare miss it. It’s one of the most beautiful films ever made.

Other footwear favorites include Leslie Caron in the musical Cinderella adaptation “The Glass Slipper” (12:30 a.m.) and the 1960 Buddy Hackett short “The Shoes” (2:30 a.m.). Feet, don’t fail me now!
