KU announces Canada slate

Jayhawks to play four games on exhibition tour

Kansas University’s men’s basketball team will play four exhibition games in three days on its Labor Day weekend trip to Canada, KU officials announced Thursday.

KU will play the University of British Columbia on Sept. 4 at War Memorial Gym in Vancouver.

On Sept. 5, KU will play Langara College at Langara Gym in Vancouver, and University College of the Fraser Valley at Student Activity Centre in Abbotsford.

On Sept. 6, KU will meet Simon Fraser at East Gym in Burnaby.

No times have been announced. Each of the gyms seats about 2,000 fans.

The public will be allowed to attend the games, but it’s unknown whether there will be a charge for admission.

“British Columbia and Simon Fraser are two of the better teams in Canada. The other two are smaller schools in the area,” KU senior associate AD Larry Keating said. “All of the games will be within a half hour of Vancouver.”

The games likely will be aired on the Jayhawk radio network.

Asked if it would be a trip fans would want to consider making, Keating said: “Well, I think they are exhibition-type games. It is over Labor Day weekend, so if somebody wants to get away … these are all 1,500- to 2,000-seat gyms.

“If the games turn out to be popular there, there’s the possibility they’ll issue tickets. Details still must be worked out.”
