Central United Methodist Church

A personal growth study will begin at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass.

Clinton Parkway Assembly of God

A Super Bowl party will be at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the activity center of Clinton Parkway Assembly of God, 3200 Clinton Parkway.

The party will include a potluck dinner, and a concession stand will be open.

Terry and Brenda Engler, pastors of Freedom’s Gate Ministries of Wichita, along with Ted Jones, of the Kansas City area, will minister at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services Feb. 8.

The Bible study series is at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. The theme is “The Tabernacle of Moses.”

The discipleship series, “Foundation Stones,” meets at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

An Inquirers Group meets at 9:15 a.m. Sundays at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

The group is for those who are interested in learning more about Catholicism or in converting to the faith.

Corpus Christi senior high youth will conduct a “Souper Bowl” at all weekend Masses. Members are encouraged to bring cans of soup or monetary donations to fill the decorated collection boxes. Proceeds will go to the local food pantry.

First United Methodist Church

“Sunday Night Live!” is back at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

Members are invited to have a meal at 6 p.m. Sunday and choose a study to attend at 6:30 p.m. Studies and fellowship are for all ages.

A Lenten study will begin Feb. 22.

Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church

“The Armourbearer Workshop,” led by the Rev. Terry Nance, will be from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today at Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church, 847 Ohio.

There will be a $25 pre-registration fee and a $35 charge at the door. A training manual and lunch will be included in the cost.

Plymouth Congregational Church

The second of two consecutive workshop sessions on the book “Excavating Jesus: Beneath the Stones, Behind the Texts” will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The book is co-authored by John Dominic Crossan, who will be the 2004 Theologian in Residence, and Jonathan Reed. It integrates archeological and exegetical methods to illustrate the life and times of Jesus, as well as the communities that formed the basis of the Gospel accounts.

The presentation will include a survey of the book’s critics. It will be the fourth advance workshop to prepare Lawrence residents for Crossan’s visit to the city in April.

The workshops are free and open to the public. Participants do not need to have read Crossan’s books or bring them to the workshop. Child care is provided.

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church

A new, three-part series of confirmation preparation for adult Catholics begins with the 8:30 a.m. liturgy today at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Ky.

There will be presentations and discussion until noon in the Simon Parish Center.

In observance of the feast of St. Blase on Monday, there will be a blessing of throats at all Sunday liturgies, including the Sunday anticipated liturgy at 5:30 p.m. today.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

This week’s message, “The Path to Personal Peace,” will be presented at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

The church’s children will give a special presentation at the 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Sunday services, and the Celebration Singers will perform at the 10:45 a.m. service.

“Pasta with the Pastors” will be at noon Sunday, and the youth will be host to a special Super Bowl potluck party after the 5:30 p.m. service.

Trinity Episcopal Church

Adult confirmation classes will continue Sunday after the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1011 Vt. A light lunch will be served. Led by the Rev. Jonathon Jensen, the classes are in preparation for the Feb. 8 visit of Bishop Dean Wolfe to Trinity. Those who are taking the classes will be confirmed by Wolfe that day.

Zane Wilemon, youth director, will lead the youth confirmation class at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the youth room. Rolls and juice will be provided.

The ICAN quilt will be displayed Sunday in the parish hall. The quilt will be raffled Saturday at ICAN’s annual pie sale and quilt show. Tickets will be available to purchase.

Conversations on feminist theology begins at 9 a.m. Feb. 7 in the junior high room. Led by the Rev. Judy Long O’Neal, the group will study and discuss the video “Mother Wove Morning” by Carol Lynn Pearson. The group also will meet Feb. 14, 21 and 28.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

An inter-generational service will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N. 1100 Road.

Allan Hanson, of the Lawrence Coalition for Peace & Justice, will present a program, “The Project for a New American Century,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Coffee and fellowship will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

West Side Presbyterian Church

A carry-in dinner after Sunday worship services at West Side Presbyterian Church, 1204 Kasold Drive, will honor the Rev. Jay Gideon.

Gideon is completing his interim ministry at the church.

Holy Communion will be observed as Gideon’s last service to the Lawrence congregation before his retirement.

The mission and stewardship committee will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The men’s luncheon will be Thursday at the Plum Tree restaurant, 2620 Iowa, and the Women’s Association Coordinating Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 7 to set its program for the coming year.
