Jayhawk Invite attracts diverse field

With frigid temperatures and icy sidewalks outside, at least Anschutz Pavilion should be nice and warm for today’s Jayhawk Invitational.

“You can expect warm weather,” Kansas University coach Stanley Redwine said. “Number two, whatever your favorite event is, you can expect to see it here.”

More than 25 schools are expected at the event, which consists of 20 track and 12 field events.

The field events begin at 11 a.m., with the final event scheduled to start around 5 p.m. The track action will start at noon, with the final event slated for 6:35 p.m.

Among the Jayhawks on display will be Leo Bookman, the senior standout who qualified for the NCAA championships in the 200-meter dash at the Arkansas Invitational with a conference-best time of 20.81.

“Most people qualify toward the end of the season,” Redwine said. “That just goes to show how talented Leo is.”

But Bookman is just one gear in the KU machine.

“From top to bottom everybody’s doing a good job,” Redwine said. “It’s a group effort. It may be individual by event, but it is a team sport. We take it from a team perspective.”

The invitational will continue Sunday as 419 teen-age athletes from eight states will compete in 25 events.

Meet director Tim Weaver said Sunday’s competition, which begins at 1 p.m., would include athletes from Lawrence, Baldwin, De Soto and other area towns.
