Company changes story on Topeka closure

? A company has changed its reason for closing a Topeka call center.

Carol Hahn, a spokeswoman for TeleTech Holdings Inc., said Thursday that the company had made an error because of an “internal miscommunication.”

The closing on April 2 “has become necessary because we reached the end of our lease agreement and not, as was reported, due to any action by any of TeleTech’s clients,” Hahn said. “There has been no change in the relationship between TeleTech and any of its clients.”

When asked why TeleTech, which is based in Englewood, Colo., didn’t renew the lease, Hahn said she couldn’t comment. Earlier Thursday, she confirmed that some work was being transferred to DeLand, Fla., and Niagara Falls, N.Y.

TeleTech assists customers with questions about billing, Internet access and phone service. It began operations at Topeka in 1999 and now employs 790 people there. Last August it said it was hiring an additional 100 people in Topeka and that there was no truth to rumors of possible cutbacks.
