Report: County gets a ‘B’ in services for children

Douglas County remained stable during 2003 when it came to providing for its children’s needs, according a report released Friday morning.

The county received a “B” grade — the same as last year — on the Children’s Report Card issued by the Kansas Action for Children Inc. and the Partnership for Children and Youth Inc.

The report card uses 17 indicators divided into five categories to compile the grade.

Categorical grades included a “C-plus” in safety and security, “B-plus” in health, “A-minus” in education and “B-minus” in teen years. The county received an incomplete in the area of child care because data wasn’t available for the grade.

The report card was unveiled Friday morning during an event at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, D-Lenexa, and Rod Bremby, state secretary of health and environment, attended the event.
