Manhattan

Notable: Manhattan and its first round opponent, Free State, have never played each other before.

Shawnee Heights

Players to watch: Jessica Mainz (11.1 ppg), Julia Hale (9.9 ppg).

Notable: A perennial power, Shawnee Heights went 19-5 last year and advanced to the Class 5A state semifinals.

Wichita North

Players to watch: Beth Troutt (14.3 ppg), Syeeda Echols (8.4 ppg), Danielle Hartley (8.4 ppg).

Notable: Two of North’s three losses were to Wichita Carroll and Wichita Heights, both ranked in the top three in state.

Kansas City Schlagle

Players to watch: Ashley Birch (14.0 ppg), Chaymeiyan Moss.

Notable: Schlagle did not participate in the Classic last year, but finished fifth in 2002.

Topeka Highland Park

Players to watch: Nettie Hunt (14.0 ppg), Amber Parker (11.4 ppg).

Notable: Highland Park was just at Free State last week, beating the Firebirds, 63-56, in a regular-season game.

Blue Valley

Players to watch: Melissa Stevens (13.9 ppg), Kenzie Ziegler (10.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg).

Notable: Blue Valley reached the Class 5A state tournament last year despite a 5-18 record.
