Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

? Highlights of Monday’s activities at the Kansas Legislature:

  • Salina Superintendent Gary Norris’ plan for raising taxes to provide $1.07 billion in additional revenues for schools began circulating among legislators.
  • Senators reacted skeptically to a bill designed to combat identity theft, even though the measure passed the House unanimously last year.

Also:

  • Two House members introduced a proposal to abolish the State Board of Education and replace it with a secretary of education appointed by the governor.
  • Rep. Oletha Faust-Goudeau, D-Wichita, was sworn in to replace Donald Betts, who was chosen by fellow Democrats to fill the seat of retired Sen. Rip Gooch.

Clock is ticking:

Monday was the 15th calendar day of the session, out of 90 scheduled. The count includes weekends because legislators still get paid.
