‘Hottest team in league’ wins again

Grizzlies pop Nuggets to extend franchise-record streak to eight

? The Memphis Grizzlies are on the best run in franchise history, and they want to keep going.

Bonzi Wells scored 17 points, and the Grizzlies extended their franchise-record winning streak to eight games with a 106-88 victory Sunday over Denver.

“I think we might be turning some eyes,” Memphis point guard Jason Williams said. “But I think we’ve got a long way to go.”

Memphis shot 70 percent (26-for-37) in the second half when its outscored Denver 64-39 on the way to its seventh straight home win.

Pau Gasol and Stromile Swift each scored 15 for Memphis, and Lorenzen Wright and Mike Miller finished with 12.

“They outhustled us, outdefended us, outcoached us and outplayed us in the second half,” Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. “We just played the hottest team in the league. They are also the steadiest team in the league.”

Carmelo Anthony shot 10-for-17 and scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half for Denver. Andre Miller added 19, and Earl Boykins had 12 in a reserve role.

“I don’t think that we as a team really wanted to win that badly,” Anthony said. “We sort of gave up at the end when they were making a run, and that’s not like us.”

The Nuggets’ guards caused problems for the Grizzlies in the first half. Andre Miller scored 10 in the first quarter, and Boykins used his quickness to outrun Memphis’ guards down the floor and scored 10 first-half points.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets’ defense held Memphis to 41 percent shooting and forced 10 turnovers.

Mavericks 108, Kings 99

Dallas — Michael Finley scored 23 points, and the Mavericks won their eighth straight, knocking off Sacramento. After the Kings, who entered with the Western Conference’s best record at 30-12, fought back from a 10-point deficit to tie the game at 97 on Mike Bibby’s three-pointer with 2:14 left, the Mavericks scored nine straight points to clinch the victory.

Rockets 99, Magic 87

Orlando, Fla. — Yao Ming scored 21 of his career-high 37 points in the third quarter to cover up an awful game by Steve Francis, and Houston won for the sixth time in seven games. Yao also grabbed 10 rebounds for his 20th double-double of the season and sixth during the Rockets’ recent run.

Nets 110, Celtics 91

East Rutherford, N.J. — Richard Jefferson scored 25 points, and New Jersey ended its longest losing streak since Jason Kidd joined the team more than two years ago. Kenyon Martin added 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Kidd had 10 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds to help the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions snap a five-game slide.

Bulls 96, Raptors 89

Chicago — Jamal Crawford scored 27 points, and Chicago broke a six-game losing streak in the teams’ first meeting since a major Dec. 1 trade. Crawford also hounded former teammate Jalen Rose, who finished with 22 points for the Raptors but shot just 5-for-12 from the field in his return to Chicago. Toronto has lost five straight.

T’wolves 99, Suns 95

Minneapolis — Sam Cassell scored 14 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Timberwolves to their fourth straight win. Kevin Garnett had 19 points, 17 rebounds and eight assists as Minnesota extended its home winning streak to 11 games. The Wolves moved into a tie with Sacramento for the best record in the Western Conference at 30-12.

Hawks 91, Pistons 82

Auburn Hills, Mich. — Jason Terry scored 22 points, and Stephen Jackson added 21 as short-handed Atlanta ended Detroit’s nine-game home winning streak. Atlanta only dressed nine players due to injuries, but still ended its four-game losing streak on the road. The Pistons have lost three straight since a 13-game winning streak.
