Casey Greenly, Lawrence, has been appointed Capitol Federal Savings’ assistant lending manager for the Lawrence area. She has worked for the company since 1997. She serves on the 2004 Capitol Federal Community Relations Committee and is the recipient of the Capitol Federal Chairman Achievement Award.

  • Wal-Mart donated $1,500 to the area’s Toys for Tots program. The store gave $50,939 to agencies in the community during 2003.
  • Jacqueline Wigington, of Pet World in Lawrence, has met certification requirements of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council as a certified avian specialist. The set of credentials is part of a study program of veterinary care and animal husbandry under the PIJAC Certified Animal Specialist Program.
  • Sandy Garber and Ken Ollila, of Lawrence Realty Associates, have earned the Graduate Realtor Institute designation. They attended 90 hours of real estate educational classes.
  • Lawrence native Anita Stemmerman, member of the St. Luke’s Northland Hospital Auxiliary, has been elected president of the Missouri Association of Hospital Auxiliaries.

For her key statewide project she has selected a campaign called “More Nurses for Missouri.” The 97 Missouri auxiliaries will focus on the project, which will promote opportunities for people considering a career in nursing.

A retired licensed practical nurse, Stemmerman entered nursing school at age 40 after raising four children. During her 13-year career, she worked in a hospital, nursing home, and private duty. She has been retired 14 years and lives in North Kansas City.

  • The Council for Corporate and School Partnerships is sponsoring the National School and Business Partnerships Award. Six partnership programs will be honored in the award’s inaugural year, and recipients will receive $10,000 for the school to support continued partnership efforts.

  • Leadership Kansas, a leadership development program of The Kansas Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has begun accepting nominations for its 2004 class.

The Leadership Kansas Class of 2004 will graduate in October after participating in a number of programs planned throughout Kansas to inform the class of key issues facing the state and to inspire participants to become activists in creating future solutions.

Honors and awards

CornerBank has announced that Alice Fowler is the Community Cornerstone Award recipient for the month of January. In recognition of Fowler’s service, CornerBank will contribute $100 to the Al Parker Scholarship Fund. A public reception honoring Fowler will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the CornerBank lobby, 4621 W. Sixth St.

For more than 50 years, Fowler has been a member at First Regular Missionary Baptist Church. She sings in the church choir and is president of the Mission Group at the church.

She has been involved with many organizations throughout Lawrence, including March of Dimes, Kidney Foundation, Heart Foundation and Cancer Foundation. The Chamber of Commerce honored her with the Don Volker Award for her community involvement. Fowler was a speaker for Leadership Lawrence.

Before retiring, Fowler was a secretary for the Lawrence Fire Department for 20 years.

Coming events

A group of Douglas County agencies and services will present the “Slice of Agriculture” Jan. 29-30 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The program will educate fourth-grade students about the value of agriculture and how it relates to nutrition, health and the economy.

During the two-day event, more than 800 students and 60 community leaders will learn about grains, machinery, soil and water conservation, dairy, vegetables, beef, pork and food safety.

  • Phillip Rademacher, president of Rademacher Financial Inc., will offer the course “Financial Strategies for Successful Retirement.” The course will cover financial basics, retirement income, investments, risk management and estate planning.

The course consists of four sessions and will be presented on four consecutive Tuesdays or Thursdays, beginning Feb. 10 and Feb. 12. The sessions will be from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Memorial Union Shawnee Room at Washburn University.

The cost is $49.99 in advance or $69.99 at the door.

  • The first Kansas Small-Business Day will be Feb. 3 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka. Small-business owners will meet with legislative leaders and discuss various issues. The meeting’s agenda is designed to give small-business owners an understanding of how the political process affects their businesses.
