Baldwin Invitational: Ottawa claims championship

Baldwin's late free throws clinch victory over Lincoln Prep

? In a game where points were scarce, Ottawa High’s boys basketball team managed to score just enough to eke out a 45-42 win over Lincoln Prep (Mo.) in the championship game Saturday of the Baldwin Invitational.

To get those winning points, the Cyclones went to a player known for scoring in bunches: Lee Baldwin. The senior guard hit four free throws in the final 40 seconds to give the Cyclones (11-2) its third tournament title in the last four years.

The score was tied at seven after the first quarter. Ottawa led 20-17 at half and was up on the Tigers 35-34 going into the fourth.

“You could pretty much tell four minutes into the third quarter that nobody was going to get away from anybody,” Ottawa coach David Grover said.

Ottawa always has been known for its pressure defense, but the Tigers (15-2) also frustrated the Cyclones with their presser and box-and-one defensive scheme.

“I thought it took the whole first half to get adjusted to that,” Grover said of Lincoln Prep’s defense.

When the Cyclones finally broke through the box-and-one with rocket passes, forwards Andrew Maxwell, Caleb Blakesley and Clint Bones found the basket from close range. The three finished with a total of 28 points. Baldwin and Maxwell led Ottawa with 11 points each.

The Tigers relied heavily on the deft shooting touch and long arms of forward Greg Smith, who finished the evening with a team-high 14.

Baldwin was joined by Drew Waldron on the all-tournament team. Smith and guard Robert Nutt were the Tigers’ selections. Other area players named to the team were Wellsville’s Ryan Oshel, Mill Valley’s Jacob Eaton and David Woods.

Ottawa will travel Friday to Santa Fe Trail.
