Knights of Columbus Lawrence Council 1372 announced its Knight and Family of the Month for December 2003.

Anthony Augusto was named Knight of the Month. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for two years. He is the Deputy Grand Knight and the program director for Council 1372. He also helps with Bingo and parish breakfasts.

The Ervin Huslig family was named Family of the Month. Ervin has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for 31 years. Ervin, his wife, Mary Ann, and their children, Chris, Michelle, Lawanna and Donna are active in church. Ervin is a lector and Mary Ann is a Eucharist minister at St. John the Evangelist. They have helped the Knights of Columbus with Bingo. Chris has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for nine years. Mary Ann, Michelle and Lawanna are members of the Daughters of Isabella.

  • The Betty Washington Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution met Jan. 17 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt. The following officers were elected for the 2004-2005 year: Mary Burchill, regent; Mary Lynn Stuart, vice regent; Patricia Koehler, chaplain; Joan Scannell, recording secretary; Stacy Cope, treasurer; Geraldine Livers, registrar, and Nancy Helmstadter, historian.

Members were encouraged to observe “The 2004 National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans,” Feb. 8-14 with visits and valentines to local veterans.

Maria Butler discussed upcoming Lawrence Public Library events and the life of Langston Hughes.

The next meeting will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 21 at the library. There will be a Valentine’s Day celebration.

  • The Lawrence 299ers Duplicate Bridge Club met Jan. 14. Five tables competed in a stratified game that used a Howell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Olivier Urruty and Dan Osman finished in first place in A and B. Donna Munson and Pat Lombardi placed second in A. Harriet Olson and Artie Shaw placed third in A, second in B, and first in C. Mary Beth Treece and Phyllis McAdoo placed fourth in A, third in B and second in C.

  • The Lawrence TGIF Duplicate Bridge Club met Jan. 16. Nine tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Don Brennaman directed the game.

Playing North-South, Bill Hamilton and Don Brennaman claimed first place in A, B and C. Lynn Hui and Harry Shaffer placed second in A. Patt Radford and Cathy Blumenfeld finished third in A. Olivier Urruty and Russell LaForce took fourth in A and second in B.

Sitting East-West, Betty Collier and Lois Clark captured first place in A, B and C. Paul Heitzman and Dave Piro placed second in A. Madelyn Jenks and Mona Bell placed third in A, and second in B and C. Harriet Olson and Artie Shaw took fourth in A and third in B and C.

  • The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. Ten tables competed in a stratified game that used a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the play.

Competing North-South, Madelyn Jenks and Phyllis Brownlee claimed first place in A, B and C. Dave Piro and Donna Johnson finished second in A. John Hickey and Patt Radford placed third. Shirlie Vaughn and Mary White were fourth.

Sitting East-West, Virginia Seaver and Paul Heitzman placed first in A. Bruce McKeithan and Freda Gilmore placed second. Ilse Steinhardt and Bebe Huxtable finished third in A and first in B and C. Olivier Urruty and Don Brennaman took fourth in A and second in B and C.

  • University Bridge Club announces winners of its Jan. 17 game. Lois Liebert, Marian Lang and Tom and Cathy Waller were hosts.

Blue winners were Tom Waller, first; Jean Khatib, second; Florence McNicoll, third; Al Smith, fourth; and Lois Liebert, fifth.

Pink winners were Jean Dunn, first; Marty Hartman, second; Virginia Williams, third; Mildred Hoffman, fourth; and Gladys Dight, fifth.

  • Lions Pause, the monthly newsletter of the Lawrence Noon Lions and River City Lions Clubs, received first place in the newsletter competition at the Lions Mid-Winter Rally Jan. 10 in Salina. The newsletter was edited by Janet Campbell, of Lawrence Noon Lions, and designed by Art Hadley, of the River City Lions. A $75 award was presented to the clubs and will be the first donation to the newly formed Lions Clubs of Lawrence Foundation.
