Recruit shuns KU for Louisville

Scratch Mozell Axson Jr. from Kansas University’s football recruiting list.

Axson — a 6-foot-1, 230-pound linebacker from Jenkins High in Lakeland, Fla., who has not yet met NCAA academic standards — had planned to come to KU after his campus visit Dec. 12, but he changed his mind.

“I went ahead and committed to Louisville this weekend,” Axson told rivals.com. “I guess I technically never committed to Kansas. I told the coaches that I wanted to come, but they wouldn’t accept my commitment until I was qualified.”

Without Axson, KU has 16 known commitments, and KU coach Mark Mangino has said he would like to have 21 or 22 players in this year’s class.

At least five players will be on campus this weekend. Those expected to make visits, according to rivals.com, are: Miami linebacker Brouce Mompremier (6-0, 210); Schertz, Texas, defensive tackle Yaniv Barnett (6-3, 295); Belton, Texas, defensive end William Bell (6-4, 225); Garden City CC defensive tackle D.J. Johnson (6-2, 294); and Springfield, Ill., defensive tackle Larry Luster (6-0, 288).

Barnett already has given an oral commitment to Arizona, and Mompremier has committed to South Florida. Those agreements, however, are non-binding.
