KU graduate to appear on CNN King discussion

Former Kansas University student Deric Gilliard is scheduled to be interviewed on CNN as part of a Sunday program on the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Gilliard, 48, graduated from KU in 1977. He later wrote “Living in the Shadows of a Legend,” a collection of biographical sketches and interviews with 19 men and women who marched with King.

A former reporter for USA Today and Time magazine, Gilliard now lives in Atlanta. He said he expected to be on between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.

Philosopher to present Ottawa U. lecture

An author whose work bridges the gap between science and religion will speak Thursday at Ottawa University.

Holmes Rolston III, professor of philosophy at Colorado State University, will speak twice at the University Chapel as part of OU’s annual Presidential Lecture Series.

The early lecture, at 11 a.m., will be on “The Bible and Ecology.” Rolston’s evening lecture, at 7 p.m., will be on “Genes, Genesis and God: Values and Their Origins in Natural and Human History.”

Rolston won the 2003 Templeton Foundation Prize for Progress in Religion.

The lectures are free and open to the public.

Resource fair to explore options for disabled

The Douglas/Jefferson County Transitional Council will play host to a Resource Fair from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 4 at Lawrence Free State High School.

Participants will gain information about area resources for people of all ages with disabilities. Workshop presentations will feature experts in the field of helping the disabled who will present and answer audience questions.

Child care and refreshments will be provided. Those who need interpreters or special assistance should contact Linda Wildgen at 832-5050 or lwildgen@usd497.org, by Friday.

Group to sponsor free-throw contest

Boys and girls ages 10 to 14 can show off their skills at the annual Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Championship at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 at St. John School, 1208 Ky.

Winners can advance to participate in district and state competitions. International champions are determined by scores earned at the state level.

Students to compete in ‘Future City’ building

Students from 26 schools will gather Jan. 24 at Kansas University for the regional finals of the 2004 National Engineers Week Future City Competition.

The seventh- and eighth-graders will create computer and three-dimensional models of a city and write an essay on solving an important social need with engineering.

They will present their work to a panel of judges, with the first-place team advancing to the national finals Feb. 22-28 in Washington, D.C.

The competition runs from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Spahr Engineering Classroom in Eaton Hall.
