Fitting tribute

To the editor:

Rev. William Dulin and the Ecumenical Fellowship, Inc. would like the community to participate more financially in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration.

The reason we have this national holiday is that King knew how to make his message resonate with every race and religion — not just in America, but around the world. His words have inspired people of every faith to work toward a more just society.

However, too often in the past 18 years of Lawrence’s celebrations, the vision has been narrowed to sectarian evangelism — not the message King dreamed from his “pulpit” at the Lincoln Memorial.

When the planning and the program encompasses all of us here in Lawrence, including our schoolchildren, who have much to add, we will have a celebration truly befitting this national holiday. I believe the community will then participate generously and with great pride, the Lied Center will be filled, and King’s vision of equality will come much closer to becoming a reality.
