Patriot Act view

To the editor:

Is the City Commission delusional or so easily swayed by a special interest group that it thinks that it speaks for the majority of residents in Lawrence when it is ready to formalize the city’s opposition to the Patriot Act? Where does the Kansas Bill of Rights Defense Committee get off thinking that it represents the views of most of the residents of Lawrence?

Your personal beliefs on this law can be made apparent to your elected representatives quite easily, but you have no authority or right to state your opinion of this law as representative of the city of Lawrence, just because of a special interest group’s request.

I have never seen any polling or sampling done throughout the city to assess the public’s position on the Patriot Act, yet this committee would ask the city to act in our name. I, for one, am able to speak for myself and do not need the City Commission or this committee to speak for me.

Just who do the city commissioners think they are?
