Firebirds win, LHS third at SM North meet

Overland Park — Free State High’s swimming and diving team won the Shawnee Mission North meet Thursday night at the Indians’ pool.

Free State totaled 404 points; Lawrence High placed third with 232.

Free State winners were: Alex Brunfeldt (200 IM, 500 free), Chris Wolff (50 free, 100 free), Anthony Portela (100 fly, 100 breaststroke), Chase Torgerson (100 back).

Lawrence High’s Nick Leet won the diving with 250.85 points.

Brunfeldt, Wolff, Portela and Torgerson all set school records and qualified for state.

Central Methodist topples Baker men

Baldwin — Lawrence High product D.J. Watkins led all players with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough for Baker University’s men’s basketball team Thursday in an 80-76 loss to Central Methodist.

Watkins sank five of 10 three-pointers and made seven of 10 foul shots.

Brandon McDonnell added 11 points for Baker (4-12, 1-4 Heart of America). Jordan Willer led Central Methodist (9-8, 3-2) with 22 points.

Baker women triumph over Central Methodist

Baldwin — Jessica Pontious led three Wildcats in double figures Thursday, and Baker’s women’s basketball team defeated Central Methodist, 66-54.

Pontious led all players with 16 points. Ashley Ohlman added 12 for Baker (8-7, 4-1 Heart of America), and Courtney Hodges had 10.

Heather Haake led CMC (7-9, 1-4) with 15 points.
