— This time, Santa Fe Trail High left no doubt.

The Chargers, who had suffered one-point losses to DeSoto and Kansas City Piper in their previous two boys basketball games, claimed their first victory of the season Wednesday with a 53-39 victory over Basehor-Linwood.

"It feels good," SFT coach Jason Schaffer said. "We've lost a lot of close games. It's good to get over that hump. The kids have worked hard, and it's good to see them smiling again. We hope to build on this and start a winning streak."

Santa Fe Trail's Shawn Conklin led all players with 15 points, and Jake Carter added 12.

SFT (1-4) was scheduled to play Basehor-Linwood Tuesday, but the game was postponed a day because of the weather.

"We were pleased with that," SFT coach Brenda Dahl said. "Defensively, we gave great effort. We had a spurt there ... we were disappointed to give up 19 points in the fourth quarter. We were up 20 and we got lazy, so we'll have to correct that, but overall, for three quarters, we played solid defense. Now we just need to find a way to not let lulls like that happen."

The Chargers will travel Friday to Perry-Lecompton.
