‘Return of the King’ reigns again

Los Angeles — Hollywood made way for a third straight week of box-office dominance by “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” as no new movies opened in wide release for the New Year’s weekend.

The top 10 movies looked a lot like last week’s, led by “Rings” with $30.8 million and Steve Martin’s remake of “Cheaper by the Dozen” in No. 2 with $21.9 million, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

Ozzy has second thoughts on riding ATVs after crash

London — Singer Ozzy Osbourne says he has given up riding all-terrain vehicles after a crash twice caused him to stop breathing and left him in a coma for eight days, a newspaper reported Sunday.

Osbourne, 55, fractured his collarbone, eight ribs and a neck vertebra when the 600-pound vehicle he was riding flipped and landed on top of him Dec. 8 at his estate in Buckinghamshire, southern England. He spent a week on a ventilator.

“When I woke I was so confused you could have told me I was upside down in a kilt and I’d have believed you,” the former Black Sabbath frontman was quoted as saying in an interview with The Sunday Mirror. “I could have died or been paralyzed.”

Lou Rawls weds

Los Angeles — Lou Rawls, the velvety voiced blues and jazz singer best known for his 1976 hit “You’ll Never Find (Another Love Like Mine),” married his girlfriend of two years on New Year’s Day in Memphis.

The 70-year-old crooner wed Nina Malek Inman, a 33-year-old flight attendant, at midnight after performing New Year shows at the Liberty Bowl and the Peabody Hotel.

Rawls, who has won three Grammys in his 50-year career, released the album “Rawls Sings Sinatra” in September.

Drag bingo for charity

Durham, N.C.– A “drag bingo” event hosted by Tammy Faye Messner drew about 700 people to raise money for an AIDS service organization.

The former Tammy Faye Bakker said she was one of the first women to speak out about caring for people with AIDS when she was on the “The PTL Club” television show with her ex-husband in the 1980s.

“I was just doing what Jesus wanted me to do,” said Messner, who has remarried and lives in the Charlotte area. She divorced televangelist Jim Bakker in 1992 while he was serving a sentence for financial fraud.

The event was expected to raise $10,000 for Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolina. Those who attended filled out bingo cards as numbers were called by Messner.
