Older driver safety focus of LMH event

Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s Senior Care Services is offering the driver-safety program put together by AARP.

The driver-refresher course is specially designed for motorists age 50 and older and is intended to help senior drivers improve their skills while teaching them to avoid accidents and traffic violations.

No tests will be given. Though the class targets senior drivers, anyone who is 16 and older is welcome to attend.

Drivers will receive a course-completion certificate that can be presented to their insurance agents. Depending upon their insurance policies, they may be eligible for an insurance premium discount.

The class will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Cost is $10 per person and is payable at the door. Please make checks payable to AARP.

For more information, or to enroll, call ConnectCare at 749-5800.

Volunteers to be ‘jailed’ for MDA fund-raiser

Lawrence volunteers will be going to “jail” Wednesday for the Muscular Dystrophy Assn.

Volunteer deputies from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical and Kansas University Air Force ROTC will round up jailbirds in cars donated by Crown Chevrolet. They will be taken to Pachamama’s, where they will be fed, have their pictures taken and then turn over bail money. Each jailbird is aiming to raise $1,200 in pledges. Last year, the group received more than $38,000 from the fund-raising event.

Money raised will help the more than 1,100 children and adults with neuromuscular diseases the association serves. Services include research, support groups, help in purchasing and repairing leg braces and wheelchairs and an annual summer camp for children ages 6-21.

Golf lessons available at Eagle Bend course

Golf lessons are being offered this spring and summer for children and adults by Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Eagle Band Golf Course and Learning Center.

The first session for adults will be April 6 and will be offered at additional times throughout the spring and summer seasons. For a complete list of schedules and times, consult the department’s Web site at www.lprd.org/eaglebend/lessons.shtml.

There also are lessons starting in June for children ages 6-10 and 11-17 in a two-day camp format for both beginners and advanced golfers.

Enrollment can be done through the department’s Web site, www.lprd.org., or at any of the Lawrence Parks and Recreation facilities.

KDOT offers permits for harvesting hay

Anyone looking to mow or bale hay from the sides of Kansas highways can apply for a permit from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The department, which regulates access to property it owns along such highways, issues hay permits for up to a year. Owners of land adjacent to a highway are given first priority for applications, through March 31; after that, permits are issued in the order they are received.

Applications for permits are available at KDOT offices. Applications and more information are available at www.ksdot.org, then clicking “Public Info.”

Information also is available at (785) 296-3576, or toll-free at (877) 550-5368.
