State senator loses car-dealer license plates after they expire

? A Topeka senator has been ordered to forfeit his vehicle dealer license plates because they had expired, officials said.

State Sen. Dave Jackson, a Republican, said he turned over the tags Thursday.

Records showed that Jackson’s license to be a vehicle dealer was placed on hold in November after his insurance expired.

Jackson said that he was told by his bond agent that a delay in completing paperwork had caused the dealer license renewal to be delayed.

“I’ve been doing this for 25 years, and this is the first time anything like this has ever happened to me,” Jackson said.

Jackson owns a nursery and says he has a small used-car dealership. Dealers do not pay property taxes on their vehicles in inventory.

Officials with the state Division of Motor Vehicles said they had received several complaints that Jackson had been driving around with expired dealer plates. A field investigator went to look at one of Jackson’s vehicles that was parked in his Capitol parking spot, and it was expired, according to state officials.

After being asked about the matter by the Journal-World, Jackson issued a news release saying that after he was told about the problems, he immediately responded. “I have taken every corrective action possible,” he said.
