John Shipman Armstrong, Lawrence, received his Eagle Scout award during a Court of Honor ceremony Feb. 22 at the Dole Institute of Politics.

John began his Scouting career in Cub Scout Pack 3072, chartered to Quail Run School. He became a member of Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church, in 1998.

For his Eagle Scout project, he installed 39 birdhouses in the Bloomington Park area near Clinton Lake. He also installed a bench near the newly built playground equipment at Bloomington Beach.

John has earned 31 merit badges. He received the God & Country/God & Life award in August 2003. He is a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and Order of the Arrow, which are honor camping organizations.

His camping and high-adventure trips include H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, Missouri; Troop 59 Canoe Outing, Niangua River, Missouri; Somers Canoe Base, Minnesota; Flat Tops Wilderness Area, Colorado; and Appalachian Trial, Virginia.

He has served as assistant patrol leader, patrol leader, scribe and quartermaster.

John is the son of Carol and Chris Armstrong, Lawrence. He is a junior at Free State High School. He is a member of the FSHS swim team and National Honor Society.

  • Cub Scout Pack 3056, chartered to United Methodist Church of Lecompton, had its annual Pinewood Derby on Feb. 21 at the church.

The Pack winners were Samuel O’Trimble, first; Justin Smith, second; and Zack McAllister, third.

Bailey Pattin won the award for the most colorful car. Austin Sledd was honored for the best wedge. Deek Hanson received an award for having the most unique car.

Winners of the den races were Samuel O’Trimble, first, Austin Sledd, second, Tyler Dark, third, Webelos; Justin Smith, first, Brandon Neal, second, and William McDiffett, third, Wolf; Deek Hanson, first, Michael Kasson, second, and Zack McAllister, third, Tiger.

  • Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, served dinner during the Men’s Club Annual Sweetheart Gala at the church. Scouts who helped were Justin Deaver, Brandon Mailand, Tim Barta, Michael Smith, Charlie Turner, Nick Joseph, Steven Wilson, Brendan Golledge, Wes Hinkle, Wesley Tedlock and Doug Rawlings. They were assisted by adult leaders Tammy Barta, Harry Smith, Richard Rawlings and Sonya Maness-Turner.

The troop will have its annual pancake feed from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 7 at First United Methodist Church. Tickets may be purchased at the door. Cost will be $4 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Meals include all-you-can-eat pancakes as well as sausage, juice and coffee.

  • Cub Scout Pack 3071, chartered to Prairie Park School, had its annual Blue and Gold Event on Feb. 21 at the school. Tripp Anderson made a presentation for Friends of Scouts.

Chad Boyd, Jaron Byrnds, Tyler Denny, Stefan Kuczera, Mathew Fish and Devin Shoemaker bridged into Troop 52. David Nichols bridged into Troop 61.

The seven boys also earned their Arrow of Light award, the highest award in Cub Scouting.
