Highlights from the Kansas Legislature

Highlights of Friday’s activities at the Kansas Legislature:

  • Senators approved a bill banning convicted felons from working as bounty hunters and requiring bounty hunters to notify local law enforcement before trying to apprehend a fugitive.
  • Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed a bill permitting a speedy appeal of a judge’s preliminary order finding Kansas’ school finance law unconstitutional.
  • The House adopted a resolution honoring the parents, attorneys and activists who initiated the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, which yielded the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared segregated schools unconstitutional.

Also:

  • Senators unanimously approved a bill to require sheriffs to notify schools when a registered sex offender lives within 1,000 feet of school buildings.
  • The Senate passed a bill requiring people who are voting in a county for the first time to show identification at the polls or when they seek an advance ballot.
