Great support

To the editor:

Douglas County is a great place to live! Our citizens’ generous response to the United Way campaign proved it once again. As the 2003-2004 campaign draws to a close, I congratulate and thank the thousands of community-minded citizens who responded so positively to the campaign theme “Your Gift Matters.” Indeed, this year showed that each pledge and donation — small or large — truly makes a difference.

Thanks to all who donated for the first time; your continued support is important. To the thousands of yearly donors who increased or maintained their pledges, your steadfast support is the solid foundation upon which each year’s campaign can build. Thanks to the many commuters who made it a priority to designate their pledge to Douglas County, their home community. And thanks to the hundreds of businesses and organizations that made generous donations, often matching the pledges of their employees who lead spirited campaigns within their groups. Together, you achieved this year’s primary goal, an increased number of donations, and the resulting increase in total dollars raised for 27 United Way agencies!

This year’s campaign results, in excess of $1,462,000 donated and pledged from an estimated 6,500-plus donors, depended on the scores of volunteers who donated time and energy to serve on campaign committees. All of this is exceedingly well organized and directed by the small, dedicated staff of the Douglas County United Way!

As preparation begins for the 2004-2005 campaign, I am confident citizens throughout our community will again give their enthusiastic and generous support to the United Way of Douglas County.

Ted Haggart,

2003-2004 campaign chair,
