KU students protest Sebelius’ budget plan

? College student leaders from across the state on Monday protested Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ proposal to use student fees to help balance the budget.

“This is a direct tax on students,” said Andy Knopp, Kansas University student body president.

Knopp was among about 15 KU students and dozens of others from other regents institutions lobbying the Legislature.

Sebelius ordered 10 percent reductions in purchasing and technology expenditures, including independently funded student activities.

Knopp said those funds paid by students shouldn’t be used for general government purposes.

Sebelius’ budget proposal, Knopp said, amounts to about an $8 million cut to KU because it includes unfunded mandates, such as increased health insurance costs and a 3 percent state employee pay raise.
