County

No same-sex couples apply to be married

The floodgates have opened in San Francisco, but there has been no push for gay marriages in Lawrence.

Through Monday, no same-sex couples had sought marriage licenses in Douglas County, according to District Court Clerk Douglas Hamilton.

The Legislature outlawed same-sex marriage in 1996. Kansas statute 23-101 defines marriage exclusively as “a civil contract between two parties who are of opposite sex.”

Even so, some lawmakers say that law is not enough. The Legislature soon may consider a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would prohibit same-sex marriage.

Hamilton said he couldn’t speculate on how the court would respond to requests from same-sex couples applying for marriage licenses.

Investigation

Charges filed against plane trespass suspect

Charges were filed Monday against a Lawrence man accused of illegally entering an airplane chartered by the Iowa State University men’s basketball team.

Gary Dean Patterson, 28, was charged Monday in Douglas County District Court with two counts of criminal trespassing and one count of disorderly conduct.

Authorities say Patterson entered the ISU charter Saturday as pilots were fueling the plane at Lawrence Municipal Airport. The incident forced the Iowa State team to return to Ames on a bus while the plane underwent an extensive search.

Judge Pro Tem Peggy Kittel set bond at $1,500 for Patterson, who appeared in court via a video hookup from the Douglas County Jail.

A preliminary hearing was set for March 10.
