Roy W. Moore

Services for Roy W. Moore, 88, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ada, Ohio.

Mr. Moore died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004, at Cooper’s Home and Day Care in Lawrence.

He was born March 11, 1915, in Ada, the son of Carter and Bertha (Carey) Moore.

He was a Navy veteran, serving in World War II as a radar technician.

Mr. Moore worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for 35 years. He began his career at the Chillicothe, Ohio, correctional facility in 1938. He also worked in correctional facilities in Florence, Ariz., Seagoville, Texas, and Lewisburg, Pa. He worked in the National Training School in Washington D.C. and the central office of the Bureau of Prisons in Washington. He moved to Leavenworth in 1960 and retired from the U.S. Penitentiary there in 1973.

He worked for H&R Block in Lawrence for eight years and was local coordinator for the Senior Income Tax Assistance program for 15 years.

Mr. Moore was on the board of directors of the United Leavenworth Fund and the Federal Coordinating Group. He was a member of the group that established the Neighborhood House of Leavenworth Inc. and served as its secretary-treasurer. He served 12 years as a member of the board of directors of the U.S. Penitentiary Employees Federal Credit Union.

He had been financial secretary of the First United Methodist Church, where he was a member.

He married Mildred L. James on March 17, 1939 in Ada, Ohio. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Sharon L. Nichols, Rochester, Minn., and Ann J. Lerner, Corrales, N.M.; a son, James A., Lawrence; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Hansen-Neeley Funeral Home in Ada. The family suggests memorials to the church or to the charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of the mortuary.
