Volunteers can help area children by becoming a mentor for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County. There are 65 children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister and a great need for male mentors. Volunteers and youths spend three to four hours each week developing a friendship over a period of at least one year. Volunteer orientation sessions are offered at 5:15 p.m. every Tuesday night and at noon Wednesdays at the organization’s office. Individual appointments can be made by calling Stutz.

Immediate volunteer needs

  • Baldwin Senior Center needs volunteers help serve meals at the center and deliver meals to homebound clients. Volunteering takes about 2 hours per week. For more information, call Kathryn Russell at 594-2409.
  • Lawrence Memorial Hospital needs escort volunteers from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoons and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Substitute volunteers are also needed and will not be placed on a regular schedule. Escort volunteers greet customers, transport people being admitted or dismissed from the hospital by wheelchair and run errands throughout the hospital. Volunteers must be in good physical condition, provide excellent customer service and have the ability to learn their way around the hospital. The hospital also has a volunteer position open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the gift shop. To find out more call Allyson Leland at 840-3141.
  • Interfaith Caring Neighbors needs grocery shopper volunteers to call elderly clients once a week to see whether they need groceries and shop once per week or every other week as needed. Volunteers may also take clients grocery shopping. Call Sherry Warren at 749-2005 to find out more.
