City swimmers at state

Six Firebirds and two Lions qualified individually for the Kansas state swimming and diving championships, which begin today in Manhattan. Here’s a look at them:

Free State

Alex Brunfeldt

With a 1:42.60 time in the 200 freestyle at the Mo-Kan meet in January, along with a 4:35.07 time at the 500 freestyle at a home quad in January, Brunfeldt will be among the state’s best in both events. Should he duplicate his school record 500 free time, it would break the state record.

Chris Wolff

Wolff posted season-best times in both the 50 free (22.04) and 100 free (49.20) at the Sunflower League meet Feb. 7. He’ll be a strong contender this weekend in both and likely will have a hand in the relays, too.

Chris Sellon

Sellon, a junior, posted a time of 2:02.81 in the 200 individual medley at a home quad in January, as well as a qualifying time of 4:53.06 in the 500 freestyle at the Mo-Kan in January. He’ll be a crucial cog for the team’s point totals this weekend.

Anthony Portela

Just a junior, Portela will represent the Firebirds in both the 100 fly and 100 breast, with both of his season-best times (52.67 in the 100 fly, 1:01.09 in the 100 breast) coming at the Sunflower League meet Feb. 7.

Chase Torgerson

The youngster of the bunch, Torgerson, a freshman, will be the Firebirds’ lone representative in the 100 backstroke, with his season-best time of 56.97 coming at a home quad in January. He also qualified in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:08.53.

Nathan Schriner

Schriner’s season-best 1:06.31 in the 100 breaststroke at the Sunflower League meet easily qualified him as an individual. He later learned that his consideration time of 53.07 in 100 freestyle was fast enough to qualify in that event, as well. The late qualifier assured that all six Firebirds will be competing in two individual events this weekend.

400 free relay

The Firebirds posted a state-qualifying and school-record time of 3:18.19 at the Mo-Kan meet in January. They also set a Sunflower League meet record Feb. 7, finishing in 3:19.23.

200 free relay

The Firebirds’ best performance came at a home quad in January, when they finished in 1:34.10. They nearly duplicated that time at the Sunflower League meet, finishing in 1:34.12.

200 medley relay

Free State topped the qualifying time by nine seconds in the Sunflower League meet, finishing in a season-best 1:42.05. That time should earn them a high seed for the state meet.

Lawrence High

Nick Leet

As a junior, Leet is one of the state’s top divers. He won the Sunflower League crown Feb. 7, posting a score of 491.25. It was just short of the Lawrence High school record.

Ian Legler

In the Sunflower League meet — the final meet before state — Legler qualified in two individual events. He posted a time of 1:07.00 in the 100 breaststroke, then qualified in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:13.97.
