Athletes of the week
Jesse Hardy
Free State High
Class: Sophomore
Sport: Wrestling
The week: Hardy quickly has established himself as a force in the state of Kansas. Just a sophomore, Hardy dominated the 189-pound field, a class usually controlled by upperclassmen, at the Sunflower League wrestling meet Saturday. He went 3-0 — all on pins — including a fall just 1:35 into the championship match against Olathe East’s Matt Jenkins. Hardy, who wrestled at 215 the first part of the year, is 27-8 this season, with Class 6A regionals coming up Saturday in Leavenworth.
Comment: “Jesse’s a very strong, talented athlete,” FSHS coach Darrell Andrew said. “Along with that, and with the skill he’s developing, it makes him a handful.”
Andy Hannon
Baldwin
Class: Senior
Sport: Basketball
The week: Hannon returned to action last week after a missing a month because of a broken hand and immediately helped the Bulldogs. He has averaged 31 points a game since his return, pouring in 36 in an 80-51 victory over Prairie View on Feb. 12, then scoring 26 more in a key 68-59 victory over rival Eudora on Friday. Hannon’s return sparked the Bulldogs, who are 8-10 with two games to play before sub-state action begins.
