Dental concern

To the editor:

The recent Journal-World article concerning the mercury accident at Quail Run School stated, “more than 20 years ago, it (mercury) could even be found in dentists’ offices because it was used in tooth fillings,” inferring that mercury is no longer used in tooth restorations.

Unfortunately, about 75 percent of U.S. dentists still routinely use mercury fillings to repair teeth. Even more unfortunate, some insurance companies, including Delta Dental of Kansas, refuse to pay benefits for porcelain or composite restorations. Instead, they will only pay for mercury fillings or apply that amount toward the porcelain or composite restoration fee.

I would encourage people who have concerns about mercury fillings to ask their dentist about alternative treatment options, and to request their employers to review their dental insurance policies regarding payment of benefits only for mercury fillings.
