Calvary Temple Assembly of God

Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 606 W. 29th St. Terrace, will have a water baptism after the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

A new series, “Twelve Gates of the City,” will be taught during the morning services for the next few Sundays. Both the heavenly city of New Jerusalem and the earthly city of Jerusalem have 12 gates; each gate has a special name and meaning.

Canterbury House

The Rev. Dean Wolfe, the newly elected Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, will make his annual visitation Sunday to Canterbury House, 1116 La., the Episcopal Church at Kansas University.

Wolfe will preach, celebrate and confirm at 5 p.m. A festive dinner and reception will follow at 6 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m., Canterbury House will launch its new “Faith Forum” series, when Wolfe will talk about the consecration of the Rev. Gene Robinson as the first openly gay bishop in the worldwide Anglican Communion. He will also talk about the blessing of same-sex unions, as permitted by the General Convention of 2003.

Central United Methodist Church

United Methodist Women Sunday will be celebrated at the 10:45 a.m. Sunday worship services at Central United Methodist Church, 1501 Mass. The theme this year is “Sing a New Song.” United Methodist Women members will serve as ushers and greeters.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church

Coffee and doughnuts will be served after Sunday Masses at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 6001 W. 15th St.

Blood pressure checks also will be available after Sunday Masses.

Adoration in church will be from 7:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday.

Faith Church of the Nazarene

A “Cowboy Valentine’s” evening will be celebrated today at Faith Church of the Nazarene, 1020 Kasold Drive.

A pasta supper will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by music and cowboy poetry. There is no charge to attend this event.

The community is also invited to attend a concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at the church. Faith Project, a male quartet from College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe, will lead a concert of contemporary and traditional Christian music.

Refreshments will be available after the concert. A freewill offering will be received.

First Christian Church

The Lawrence Men’s Chorale will share special music, “Steal Away,” at the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service at First Christian Church, 1000 Ky.

The First Christian Church’s children’s choir will provide special music at the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service.

Child care is provided at all services.

First Presbyterian Church

At the conclusion of the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway, the Session of the church will open a congregational meeting.

The meeting’s purpose is to concur with the Presbytery of Northern Kansas in dissolving the relationship between the church and the Rev. Jim Dunkin, as required by church polity. (Dunkin has accepted a position as head of staff at First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury, N.C.)

Lisa Wagner will perform “Haunted by God,” a one-woman show about Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, at 5 p.m. Sunday at the church. The performance is open to the community.

The church will be host to the fourth annual Habitat MusicFest at 7 p.m. Sunday. The event, a fund-raiser for Lawrence Habitat for Humanity, will be a diverse sampling of sacred music from a variety of church choirs.

Lawrence Wesleyan Church

Master’s Commission, a youth ministry team of 15 young people, will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lawrence Wesleyan Church, 3705 Clinton Parkway. There also will be a special performance for youth-group-age children at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Tickets will be on sale Sunday for the annual Valentine banquet, which is scheduled for Friday. The event, sponsored by Second Wind Youth and Women’s Ministries, is open to all adults. Each $10 ticket includes a buffet meal, dessert, entertainment and child care.

Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship

There will be an evening devoted to worship from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Mustard Seed Christian Fellowship, 700 Wakarusa Drive.

Plymouth Congregational Church

The Rev. Kendall Baker and his wife, Sonia, will be guests at a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m. today at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

Baker is a former pastor of Plymouth. The visit by the Bakers is part of the church’s ongoing, sesquicentennial celebration. Baker will also preach at both the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Sunday services.

New members will join the congregation at both of this week’s worship services. A soup-and-bread lunch will follow the 11:15 a.m. Sunday contemporary worship.

Fifth- and sixth graders will visit Mr. Gatti’s, 3514 Clinton Parkway, at 4 p.m. Sunday for pizza and fellowship.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church

The message “When the Odds are Against You” will be presented at the 7:45 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday services at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 5700 W. Sixth St.

Theologian in Residence

The fifth advance workshop for the 2004 Theologian in Residence, John Dominic Crossan, will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The workshop will be preceded by a video of Crossan that will be shown at 5:15 p.m. Sunday.

The topic for the workshop is the book, “Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography” (1994). It is the second in a trilogy, written by Crossan, on “the historical Jesus.”

Trinity Episcopal Church

Wolfe will have a question-and-answer forum at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the parish hall. All are invited to attend and bring questions.

Wolfe will preach and celebrate at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship services. Baptisms and confirmations will be a part of the 10:30 a.m. service.

Receptions honoring Wolfe and his wife, Ellen, will follow both Sunday worship services.

Zane Wilemon will teach the youth confirmation class at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the youth room.

Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence

A spiritual celebration, “Music and Spirituality, Part I,” will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 N 1100 Road.

A program, “The New Hampshire Primary: Issues and Candidates,” presented by Ellen Reid Gold, will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

There will be coffee and fellowship from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

West Side Presbyterian Church

The Session of West Side Presbyterian Church, 1204 Kasold Drive, has called the Rev. Patricia Slider to begin her interim ministry to members and friends of the church, starting this week. She will serve the congregation until a permanent pastor has been called and installed.

Slider comes to West Side after a two-year ministry at Holton, where she led the congregation, organized Bible studies and performed pastoral care.

Arrangements are being made for an official welcome as Slider begins her ministry.
