McKinney services

Services for H. Lewis McKinney, 68, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. McKinney died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at Lake View Manor.

He was born Dec. 20, 1935, in Oklahoma City, the son of James R. and Edith Goddard McKinney. He graduated with honors from Oklahoma University in 1957. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and elected to Kappa Delta Pi. He received his doctorate from Cornell University. He taught at Yale University until 1968, when he moved to Lawrence.

Mr. McKinney was a history professor at Kansas University and retired in 1988. He was nominated for the National Book Award for “Alfred Russell Wallace and Natural Selection.” He lectured at many universities, including the University of Hawaii, and served on numerous committees and reviews.

He was a member of Church of God, Abrahamic Faith. He sang with the First Christian Church Choir in Oklahoma City and with the Glee Club at Cornell. He was a member of several academic groups, including the American Association for the History of Medicine, British Society for the History of Science, National Geographic Society and KU Evolutionists.

He married Lillie Cooper on Aug. 30, 1957, in Oklahoma City. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include his mother, Oklahoma City; a daughter, Debra Fattaahi, Lawrence; three sons, David, Sandy Valley, Nev., and Chris and Sean, both of Lawrence; three brothers, John, Arizona, James, Hawaii, and William, Oklahoma; and seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Southern Care Hospice or Church of God, Abrahamic Faith, sent in care of the mortuary.
