Kansas swept in debut

? Kansas University was blanked twice Friday on the Jayhawks’ first day of the college softball season.

KU had as many errors (three) as hits and struck out 19 times at the Arizona Triangular, suffering 5-0 and 2-0 losses to Northwestern and Arizona State.

Kansas freshman Kassie Humphreys (0-1), a Phoenix native, pitched for the Jayhawks and struck out seven Northwestern batters. The Wildcats, however, collected seven hits — including home runs by J.C. Kira and Garland Cooper — and four walks.

Melanie Wallach and Nettie Fierros slugged KU’s only hits off Northwestern’s Courtnay Foster, who struck out 12 and walked one in a complete game.

Game two was a pitching duel until the bottom of the sixth when Phelan Wright hit a two-out, two-run homer for No. 20 ASU (4-0).

KU senior Kara Pierce allowed four hits and two runs, struck out six and walked none in six innings. Arizona State’s Ashley Werschky (2-0) fanned seven KU batters and allowed just one hit.

Kansas will face Northwestern at 2 p.m. today and Arizona State at 6 p.m.
